Start By:a. Release the pressure in the braking system. Refer to Systems Operation, Testing and Adjusting "Braking System Pressure - Release" for the machine that is being serviced.b. Remove the tire and the rim. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tire and Rim Assemblies - Remove and Install" for the machine that is being serviced.c. Remove the axle shaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Axle Shaft - Remove and Install" for the machine that is being serviced.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.Dispose of fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
At operating temperature, the steering and brake hydraulic oil tank is hot and under pressure. Hot oil can cause burns.To prevent possible personal injury, release the pressure in the steering and brake hydraulic system before hydraulic lines or components are disconnected or removed.
Use the same removal procedure to remove the final drives, the brakes and the wheels from the front or from the rear of the machine. 1. Install Tooling (A) to final drive planetary carrier (1). Attach a hoist and a suitable lifting sling to Tooling (A). 2. Remove three bolts (2) from planetary carrier (1). 3. Use the hoist to carefully remove planetary carrier (1) from wheel assembly (3). The weight of the planetary carrier is 84 Kg (185 lb).4. Remove O-ring seal (4) from planetary carrier (1). 5. Disconnect hose assemblies (5) and (6) from the wheel assembly. 6. Install Tooling (C) on wheel assembly (3). Attach a hoist, Tooling (B), a suitable lifting sling and a suitable lifting chain to brake assembly (8) and Tooling (C), as shown.7. Remove 24 nuts (7) and the washers.8. Use the hoist to remove wheel assembly (3) and brake assembly (8). The combined weight of assemblies (3) and (8) is 480 Kg (1058 lb).
