Illustration 1. 9J8774 Steering Cylinder Group.At this time, there is no procedure in the Service Manual for troubleshooting seat oil leakage. The procedure which follows can be used as a check for ball seat oil leakage.
1. Put the machine on level ground, in a straight ahead (not turned) position. Make sure the steering wheel is in its center position. Start the machine and run it until the hydraulic oil is at its normal temperature for operation. Shut off the engine.2. Disconnect the two hoses at the sender cylinder which go to the receiver follow-up cylinder (see Illustration 2). Put 9S5518 Plugs and 9L8493 Caps in the hoses and fittings to prevent the loss of too much hydraulic oil and to keep dirt out of the system.3. With the operator in a normal position in the seat and the engine off, turn the steering wheel to the right until it stops. This is approximately 152 to 203 mm (6" to 8") of movement. After the wheel has stopped, keep normal force on it for an additional 15 seconds. Note any additional movement. An additional 51 mm (2") of movement is permitted. If the steering wheel goes farther than the 51 mm (2") in 15 seconds, there is oil leakage past the seat.4. If the steering wheel stops and has held in the correct position as in Step 3, turn the steering wheel to the left and do the procedure in Step 3 in the other direction.5. If the steering wheel does not stop or goes past the additional amount of movement during the 15 second test, the procedure which follows can be used to correct the problem. See Illustration 1 and 2 for location of parts.
Illustration 2. Location of parts.A. Remove the 5J7884 Seat from the bore in the receiver cylinder. Inspect the components for damage or a loose fit of the seat in the bore. Make a replacement of any damaged parts.B. When the 7J4026 Elbow and 59129 Tee are installed, make sure they are tightened against the 5J7884 Seats so the seats make a good seal in the bores of the receiver cylinder.C. Check the operation of the steering system again as shown in Steps 3 and 4. Make sure the oil leakage problem has been corrected.If there is still an oil leakage problem, make a replacement of the 9J8774 Steering (Receiver) Cylinder Group. After installation of the new cylinder group, check the operation of the steering system again.
If there is any indication of a possible problem with the steering follow-up system operation after installation of the new steering receiver cylinder, the above test must be done several times to be sure there is no oil leakage at the check valves. The ball seats can be out-of-round (not round) in a new steering cylinder and make a good seat only some of the time.Make a reference to this article in your Service Manual.
