VIMSTM 3G Communication Gateway electronic control modules (ECMs)
VIMS 3G uses two ECMs. The ECMs are called the Communication Gateway Electronic Control Modules (ECMs).The Module Identifier (MID) codes for the Communication Gateway ECM are listed below:MID 161 - Communication Gateway #1 ECMMID 162 - Communication Gateway #2 ECMVIMS 3G Persistent RAM
Communication Gateway ECMs store machine data in persistent RAM. Persistent RAM is retained by a permanent battery. Table 1 is a list of the contents in RAM that will be altered when a Communication Gateway ECM is flashed.The following data is stored in persistent RAM:

Payload calibration
All data files that can be downloaded
Active events
Logged events
Configuration parameters
Machine serial number
Equipment numberNote: Active events are stored in memory when the key start switch is turned off.

(1) The VIMSTM onboard software contains the source software (flash file) and the configuration software. The Cat® Electronic Technician (Cat ET) must be used to flash this software.
(2) Installation of the new configuration software or the same configuration software clears the configuration type.
(3) Only changes when a new feature is added to download.Operator Display

The information system uses four types of data. The four types of data are listed here:Sensed - Data is read from the sensors and the switches. The sensors and the switches communicate with the VIMS ECM.Internal - The data is generated within the VIMS ECM. The date and time are examples of internal data.Communicated - The data is received through the Cat Data Link from other machine systems. For example, the engine speed is received through the data Links from the Engine ECM.Calculated - Data mathematically determined by the Communication Gateway ECM. For example, the event duration is calculated and stored in the event list.Data Links
The data links for the monitoring system are listed below:Cat Data Link - A two wire data link that allows communication between the ECM and other machine control systems.CAN data link - Three-wire data link allows communication between ECM for a transfer of the parameter data.Ethernet (Service Tool) - Allows communication between the VIMS ECM and the service tool (laptop computer).RS-232 (Broadcast) - Serial three-wire data link allows communication between the VIMS ECM and other off-board systems that are not service tools.
