Contactor Operation
Contactor - A contactor is a switch that is controlled by temperature or pressure. The temperature or pressure that triggers the switch is set to a critical setpoint. If the setpoint is reached, an alarm or a shutdown will be activated.Contactors in Engine Protective Systems
Engine protective systems include sensors, contactors, and transducers. The sensors detect information about engine performance. The sensors are connected to contactors or transducers. The contactors and transducers are connected to a junction box.Contactors are used in the engine protection system and the alarm system. The contactors operate as a relay backup and minimum protection system in the event of a PLC failure.Contactors are set at shutdown setpoints and monitored by the MMS. When a contactor for the shutdown system closes the MMS secures the engine. The shutdown override mode may be used in order to continue engine operation.

Operation of a Thermocouple
A thermocouple is a temperature sensor. The thermocouple consists of two different metals. The metals are joined together at one end. A small voltage is produced when the junction is heated. The change in voltage is interpreted by an electronic device in order to determine a change in temperature. Caterpillar uses K type thermocouples. The K type thermocouples have ranges from -200 °C (-328 °F)to 1260 °C (2300 °F).
