Introduction
Do not perform any procedure that is outlined in this Special Instruction until the entire Special Instruction has been read and understood.This Special Instruction provides the procedure that is necessary for applying silicone sealant to Napier 297 Turbochargers on 3600 Engines.The silicone sealant is necessary when seepage of oil or of soot is experienced on engines in the field. The removal of old silicone and the application of new silicone will be required when the turbine housing is removed for orientation of the outlet or for routine maintenance on the turbocharger.Removal of Turbocharger Cartridge
Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, SENR3594, "Turbocharger Cartridge - Remove" for the removal of the turbocharger cartridge.Applying Silicone
After you disassemble the turbine housing from the cartridge, the mating surfaces must be cleaned before the silicone sealant can be applied. Clean the location for the silicone sealant. Remove all the soot and all the oil from the location. Use 222-3117 Brake Cleaner or use 222-3124 Electrical Component Cleaner to clean the area.

Apply a continuous 5 mm (0.197 inch) bead of 8T-9013 High Temperature RTV Silicone Sealant around the circumference of the turbine housing. Refer to Illustrations 1 and 2.

Immediately after you apply the silicone sealant, reinstall the turbine housing onto the cartridge. Allow a minimum of two hours for the silicone sealant to cure prior to the operation of the engine.
Stamp the information plate on the turbocharger after repair with "RTV". This will indicate that the turbocharger has been serviced.Installation of the Turbocharger Cartridge
