Air to air Aftercooler Compartment at the Front of Operator Station (17) Machine ECM (18) Connector "J1" (19) Connector "J2"Machine ECM (17) is located in the air to air aftercooler compartment at the front of the operator station. The compartment door provides access to this component. This ECM has two 70-pin connectors, connector "J1" (18) and connector "J2" (19) .Machine ECM (17) works in conjunction with the operator ECMs and with the screed ECM to control tamper system functions. The machine ECM receives input signals from components around the machine which monitor current machine operating conditions. System software compares the gathered input to information which is stored in the ECM's memory. The software evaluates the current conditions and generates output signals in order to control tamper system functions within set parameters.Note: Machine ECM (17) is programmed with self-diagnostic logic. Service information can be accessed using the operator display on the machine or using the electronic service tool, Caterpillar ET.

Machine ECM Connector "J1"When the electrical disconnect switch is in the ON position, power transfers from fuse "F15" to the following terminals of machine ECM (17) : terminal "J1-31", terminal "J1-39" and terminal "J1-47". This voltage input provides the power for the processor. When the main power relay is energized, power transfers from fuse "F4" to terminal "J1-1" of the machine ECM. This voltage input provides the wakeup signal to the machine ECM. The machine ECM is grounded at the following terminals: terminal "J1-13", terminal "J1-23," and terminal "J1-57".Machine ECM (17) and the operator ECMs are externally the same. However, due to internal differences, the machine ECM has a different part number than the operator ECMs. In order to prevent incorrect software installation, the harness configuration at each ECM provides a series of switch input signals. These signals identify the ECM's function. The machine ECM is wired as follows:
Terminal "J1-26" (ground)
Terminal "J1-27" (open)
Terminal "J1-28" (open)
Terminal "J1-32" (ground)The tamper ramp potentiometer is connected to terminal "J1-30" of machine ECM (17). The machine ECM passively monitors the tamper ramp potentiometer. The circuit works in the following way. The ECM provides an internal 5 volt power source. The circuit between this power source and the machine ground contains two resistors. One resistor has a fixed resistance. This resistor is located inside the ECM. The second resistor is a variable pull down resistor. This resistor is the tamper ramp potentiometer.Machine ECM (17) can determine the position of the tamper ramp dial by monitoring the voltage at terminal "J1-30". When the dial is in the minimum position, the voltage at terminal "J1-30" is approximately 1.75 volts. When the dial is at the maximum position, the voltage at terminal "J1-30" is approximately 3.25 volts.Machine ECM (17) communicates with the other ECMs on the machine and with electronic service tools through the Cat Data Link. The Cat Data Link is a proprietary communication standard developed by Caterpillar Inc. The Cat Data Link requires a positive line and a negative line. The positive line is connected
