Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire. To help prevent possible injury, turn the start switch off when changing fuel filters or water separator elements. Clean up fuel spills immediately.
Do not allow dirt to enter the fuel system. Thoroughly clean the area around a fuel system component that will be disconnected. Fit a suitable cover over disconnected fuel system component.
Do not use a tool in order to remove the fuel filter. Attempting to remove the fuel filter with a filter wrench or a filter strap could damage the locking ring.
Open the engine hood. The fuel filter element is on the right side of the engine compartment.
Turn the fuel supply valve (if equipped) to the OFF position before performing this maintenance.
Place a suitable container under the water separator to catch any fuel that might spill. Clean up any spilled fuel. Clean the outside of the water separator and the fuel filter.

Open the drain (3). Allow the fluid to drain into the container.
Tighten the drain by hand pressure only.
If equipped, remove the wiring harness from the sensor on the bottom of the clear bowl.
Use a strap wrench to remove the filter housing from the filter head base. The clear bowl stays with the filter housing and is not removable.
Clean clear bowl (2).
Install a new filter (1).Note: Do not pre-fill the fuel filter before you install the fuel filter.
Install a new filter hand tight until the seal of the filter contacts the base. Note the position of the index marks on the filter in relation to a fixed point on the filter base.Note: There are rotation index marks on the filter that are spaced 180 degrees or 1/2 of a turn away from each other. When you tighten the filter, use the rotation index marks as a guide.
Tighten the filter according to the instructions that are printed on the filter. Use the index marks as a guide.
Ensure that the sensor (if equipped) is in the correct position.
If equipped, install the wiring harness to the sensor.
Be sure to dispose of the fuel in a safe place.
Prime the fuel system. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System - Prime" for more information.
Close the engine compartment.Replace the Secondary Fuel Filters
Replace the secondary fuel filters immediately after you change the primary fuel filter. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System Secondary Filter - Replace"for more information.
