Information:
All Remanufactured Engines and Short BlocksIt is important and necessary that a short block or a remanufactured engine have adequate (needed) lubrication during the first few seconds of the initial (first) start-up of the engine. A start without the needed lubrication for these engines can cause bearing damage. It is our recommendation to always do the PRESSURE LUBRICATION PROCEDURE given in this instruction, before the initial start of a reconditioned or rebuilt engine.Pressure Lubrication Procedure
Some type of oil reservoir with a pressure gauge is needed to do the pressure lubrication. In the procedure that follows, a tank assembly from a 1P540 Flow Checking Tool Group is used as an example. If one of these tanks is used to do the pressure lubrication, the inside of the tank must be completely clean. Never use the same tank assembly for both pressure lubrication and for fuel flow checking. It is not possible to get the tank assembly clean enough to do both operations. Any amount of dirt, debris, etc., can cause fuel nozzle failure, when the tank is used for fuel flow checking. Other sources of clean oil under pressure, such as a service shop central oil supply, can also be used for pressure lubrication.
Air pressure must not be more than 50 psi (345 kPa) at any time.
(1) Adjust the air pressure regulator to 35 5 psi (240 35 kPa).(2) See the LUBRICATION AND MAINTENANCE GUIDE for the engine model that is to have the pressure lubrication, and find the amount of oil that is needed to fill the engine crankcase to the correct oil level. Put 30% of this amount of oil in the tank assembly for use in the pressure lubrication procedure. For some engines, 30% of the crankcase capacity will make it necessary to fill the tank assembly, shown here, more than one time. (3) For pressure lubrication of an engine, use the necessary fittings and hose to connect the tank assembly to a port that connects to the main oil gallery of the cylinder block. Illustrations (A), (B) and (C) above are examples of engine models. For engine models (A), remove a plug at the rear of the right side cylinder head and make the connection as shown. For engine models (B) and (C), remove a plug (1) or (2) on the right side of the cylinder block and connect the pressure lubrication equipment.(4) Connect shop air pressure to the tank assembly [tank assembly air pressure regulator must be adjusted to 35 5 psi (240 35 kPa)] to move the oil from the reservoir into the main oil gallery and engine lubrication passages. If shop air pressure is not available, the tank assembly shown has a hand pump that can be used to get the minimum pressure needed.(5) After the pressure lubrication procedure is complete, shut off the air pressure and disconnect the pressure lubrication equipment. Be sure to install the plug in the hole that was used for pressure
