1. Remove the drive shaft guard.2. Remove the grease fitting from the end of the drive shaft.3. Loosen nut (3).4. The weight of the drive shaft is 170 kg (375 lb). Fasten a hoist to the front section and the rear section of the drive shaft.5. Remove bolts (1), (2) and spider (4) from the front and rear of the drive shaft.6. Compress and remove the drive shaft from the machine. The following steps are for installation of the drive shaft.7. Install the grease fitting in the end of the drive shaft.8. Attach a hoist to both ends. Tighten nut (3) to hold the two sections together.9. Install the drive shaft in the machine.
Replace bolts (1) and (2) with new bolts anytime they are removed.
10. Inspect the universal joints and the mating yokes for damage to the key, keyway, threaded holes, and pilot diameters.a. If damage is present, replace accordingly.11. Clean the mating surface of the yoke assembly, including threaded holes, and the universal joint assembly so that the yoke assembly and universal joint assembly are free of wax, dirt, debris, paint, and grease.12. Clean the mating surface of the slip joint so that the slip joint is free of wax, dirt, debris, paint, and grease. Repeat for the opposite side. 13. Make sure that the torque converter and transmission yokes are aligned and in phase.14. Ensure that the universal joints are fully seated prior to tightening the bolts. There are 2 methods:a. Use a suitable rubber or wood hammer to seat the universal joints in the yoke.b. Use designated run-down bolts to completely seat the universal joints in the yoke.i. Torque the run-down bolts in a sequential alternating "X" pattern.ii. Remove the run-down bolts and replace with new 2N-2486 bolts.15. Make sure all surfaces and bolts are clean and free of grease and paint. Put front and rear spiders (4) in position on the yokes, and install new bolts (1) to hold them. Tighten bolts (1) to a torque of 550 20 N m (410 15 lb ft).16. Make sure all surfaces and bolts are clean and free of grease and paint. Put the drive shaft into position on the spiders, and install new bolts (2) to hold it. Tighten bolts (2) to a torque of 550 20 N m (410 15 lb ft).17. Perform a static bolt check (550 20 N m (406 14 lb ft)) 250 hours after the driveshaft has been installed on the machine.18. Install the guard over the drive shaft.19. Grease the drive shaft.
