Remove And Install Connecting Rod Bearings
start by:a) remove engine and torque dividerb) remove oil pump 1. Turn the crankshaft until connecting rods (1) are at bottom center. Remove the connecting rod caps (2) from these connecting rods. Remove the lower half of the rod bearings from the connecting rod caps. 2. Push the connecting rods away from the crankshaft and remove upper half of rod bearings (3).3. Check the height of the dowel (4) in the connecting rod and cap. The height of the dowel must be .068 .010 in. (1.73 0.25 mm). See GUIDELINE FOR REUSABLE PARTS, MAIN AND CONNECTING ROD BEARINGS FORM NO. SEBF8009. Install the rod bearings dry when the clearance checks are made. Put clean engine oil on the rod bearings for final assembly.4. Clean the surfaces where the rod bearings fit and install the upper half of the rod bearings in the connecting rods. Pull the connecting rods slowly on to the crankshaft.5. Clean the surfaces where the rod bearings fit and install the lower half of the rod bearings in the connecting rod caps.6. Put 5P3931 Anti-Seize Compound on the threads and bolt head seats of the rod bolts.
When connecting rod cap is installed, be sure that the number on side of cap is near to and respective to the number on side of connecting rod.
7. Put Plastigage (A) on the lower rod bearings. Do not turn the crankshaft when Plastigage (A) is in position. 8. Put connecting rod caps (5) in position on the connecting rods and install the rod bolts.
Do not use an impact wrench to tighten the rod bolts the additional 120 5°.
9. Turn both bolts for each connecting rod to a torque of 90 5 lb.ft. (120 7 N m). Put a mark on the bolts and cap. Turn both bolts 120 5° more.10. Remove the connecting rod caps and measure the width of Plastigage (A) which is the rod bearing clearance. Rod bearing clearance with new rod bearings must be .0033 to .0071 in. (0.084 to 0.180 mm). Maximum clearance for a used rod bearing is .008 in. (0.20 mm).11. Put the connecting rod caps in position on the connecting rods and install rod bolts (6). Turn both bolts for each connecting rod to a torque of 90 5 lb.ft. (120 7 N m). Put a mark on the bolts and cap. Turn both bolts 120 5° more.12. Do Steps 1 through 11 again for the other connecting rod bearings. 13. After the connecting rod bolts are tightened, check the clearance (X) between the connecting rod caps with a feeler gauge.
