Too Much Lubrication Oil Used
Cause: Oil leaks. Correction: Replace gaskets or seals and tighten all connections. Cause: Excessive oil to intake. Correction: See ITEM 20. Cause: Excessive valve guide wear. Correction: See ITEM 20. Cause: Crankcase oil level too high. Correction: Avoid overfilling. Determine cause and drain excess oil. Cause: High oil temperature. Correction: Check oil cooler bypass valve. Replace if damaged. Clean oil cooler core. Cause: Worn piston rings. Correction: Replace components as necessary. * Cause: Worn piston rings in air compressor. Correction: Repair or replace air compressor as necessary. * Cause: Engine overload. Correction: Engine operating with kW (horsepower) increased. Cause: PCV valve(s). Cause: Incorrect fuel setting or injection timing. Correction: Contact your Caterpillar dealer. Cause: Low emission system malfunction. Correction: Contact your Caterpillar dealer. Correction: Small but measurable increases in fuel consumption may be the result of damaged fuel nozzles, misfiring or factors contributing to loss of power. See ITEM 6 and ITEM 7. Cause: Engine oil diluted with fuel oil. Correction: Check lip-type seals on fuel transfer pump drive shaft. Drain crankcase and refill with clean lubricant. Cause: Damaged suction bell. Correction: Replace. Cause: Excessive crankshaft bearing clearances. Correction: Replace bearings and/or crankshaft.* Check oil filter operation. Cause: Excessive timing gear bearing clearances. Correction: Inspect bearings and replace components as necessary. Cause: Excessive rocker arm bore or rocker arm shaft wear. Correction: Check lubrication. Replace components as necessary.
