start by:a) Remove wheel assemblies Do not apply the brakes with the wheel and drum removed. Brake lining wear can be checked without removing the wheel assembly. Make a brake application and look at the position of edge (2) of the brake shoe. Lining wear is at maximum permissible when edge (2) of shoe touches face (1) of retracting spring. Linings should always be replaced before they are worn this much.1. Remove the brake linings from the frame assemblies as follows:CAUTION: When removing brake linings and frame assemblies, be careful not to get dirt or other materials on outer bearing cone and Duo-Cone seal.a) Put a screwdriver against the hook of the retracting spring (5), and push the spring inserter (A) between the hook of spring and the frame assembly.b) Use the screwdriver to push the spring through the frame assembly and out the other side.c) Lift the brake lining out of the frame assembly.CAUTION: Always replace with a full set of linings only. Install new retracting springs with the new linings. Under most conditions, the expander tubes should be replaced with the linings.2. Remove the mounting bolts (4) from each side of frame assemblies (3). Remove the two frame assemblies.3. Remove expander tubes as follows: a) Put a screwdriver or bar between the expander tube and spindle housing. Move the screwdriver or bar around the circumference of spindle housing until nozzles (6) are free of spindle housing.b) Lift the nozzles from the holes and remove the brake expander tube. Install Brake Linings and Expander Tubes
1. Thoroughly clean the outside diameter and nozzles holes (1) in spindle housing.2. Make an inspection of holes in spindle housing to be sure they do not have any rough edges.3. Remove shipping caps from nozzles of new brake expander tubes. Install the O-ring seals on nozzles. Put oil on O-ring seals.4. Push the expander tube (2) evenly into position until nozzles contact spindle housing and are in alignment with holes in housing.5. Install two .625 in. (1,6 cm) diameter bars (3) and (4) next to each nozzle, and put the expander tube in place with holes in housing in alignment with nozzles on tube.6. Put a screwdriver (5) next to each nozzle, and carefully remove each bar and screwdriver. Be sure to hold tube in position while removing bars.7. Carefully push each nozzle into its respective hole in spindle housing.8. Put the brake frame assemblies on spindle, and install the fastening bolts. Tighten the bolts on 824-825 machines to 215 20 lb.ft. (29,7 2,8 mkg). Tighten the bolts on 834-835 machines to 375 35 lb.ft. (51,9 4,8 mkg).9. Put the linings (6) in position in frame assembly.
