Information for connecting a switch directly to the ECM
Refer to Illustration 4. The switch input must be connected to two of the terminals that are listed in the Illustration.
Establish communication between the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) and the engine ECM.
Use Cat ET to determine the P1 terminals that are available. Select an available P1 terminal for the switch input.
Route two wires between the switch and the P1 connector.
Crimp a 186-3736 Connector Socket to the end of each wire from the switch.
Insert one socket into the appropriate input terminal on the P1 connector. Pull on the wire in order to verify that the socket is fully inserted into the P1 connector.
Connect the switch's return wire to terminal 3, 5, or 18 on the P1 connector according to the following procedure:
Crimp a 186-3736 Connector Socket to the end of a wire if terminal 3, 5,or 18 is available. Insert the socket into the appropriate location on the P1 connector. Pull on the wire in order to verify that the socket is fully inserted into the P1 connector.
Splice the switch's return wire onto an existing "switch common" wire if terminal 3, 5, or 18 is not available.
Connect the negative terminal to the vehicle's battery.
Refer to Table 2. Use Cat ET to program the appropriate parameter to the correct P1 terminal.

Monitor the appropriate status parameter on Cat ET. Operate the switch. Verify that the switch's status changes as the switch is activated and deactivated.Connecting the Switches to a J1939 Device
The switches may be connected to a J1939 device. The following devices are supported:
"J1939 Body Controller"
"J1939 Cab Controller"
"J1939 Instrument Cluster"
"J1939 Cab Display"
Refer to the literature that is provided by the manufacturer of the J1939 device. Wire the switch to the J1939 device.
Establish communication between Cat ET and the engine ECM.
Refer to Table 2. Use Cat ET to program the appropriate parameter to the correct J1939 device.
Monitor the appropriate status parameter on Cat ET. Operate the switch. Verify that the switch's status changes as the switch is activated and deactivated.Wiring the Lamps
The ECM provides outputs that indicate the status of the system. The ECM also provides an output that indicates the status of the ARD disable switch. Perform the following procedure in order to connect an optional lamp to an
