36. If necessary, remove ring (47) and two bearing cones (48) from pinion (46). 37. Remove bearing cup (49) from the carrier assembly.Assemble Differential
1. Lower the temperature of bearing cup (1), and install it in the carrier assembly. 2. Heat bearing cones (2) and (4) to a maximum temperature of 135°C (275°F), and install them on pinion (3) as shown. 3. Install ring (5) on pinion (3) with the round side of the ring toward the bearing.4. Put pinion (3) in position in the carrier assembly. 5. Lower the temperature of the bearing cup, and install it in retainer (6).6. Put retainer (6) in position on the carrier assembly without the O-ring seal and shims. Install three bolts spaced evenly apart.7. Use tooling (B) to slowly rotate the pinion. While the pinion is rotated, tighten the bolts evenly until a torque of 2.2 0.6 N m (20 5 lb.in.) is needed to rotate the pinion.8. Use a feeler gauge, and measure the gap at each bolt. Average the measurements.9. Remove tooling (B) and retainer (6).
Do not damage the seal contact surface when seal assembly (7) is installed in retainer (6).
10. Install seal assembly (7) in retainer (6) with the contact surface of the seal toward the inside.11. Install the O-ring seal on retainer (6). Put clean SAE 90 oil on the O-ring seal and the contact surface of seal assembly (7).12. Put shims (8) equal to the measurement found in Step 8 and retainer (6) in position on the carrier assembly. Install the bolts that hold them in place.13. Use tooling (B), and check the torque needed to rotate the pinion. 14. Put the base of tool (C) in a vise as shown.15. Align the notch in retainer (10) with the dowel in the base of tool (C), and install the retainer on the base.16. Lower the temperature of the bearing cups, and install them in pinion (9).17. Install bearing cone (12), spacer (11) and pinion (9) on retainer (10). 18. Put bearing cone (13) and the lock in position on the retainer, and install nut (14).19. Turn pinion (9), and tighten nut (14) with tool (D). Tighten the nut to a torque of 70 14 N m (50 10 lb.ft.).20. Bend the tab on the lock to hold the nut in place. 21. Heat the bearing to a maximum temperature of 135°C (275°F), and install it on housing (16).22. Align the notches in washer (15) with the dowels in housing (16), and install the washer. 23. Put gear (17) in position on the washer in housing (16). 24. Install pinion assemblies (21) on spider (20).25. Install spider (20) and pinion assemblies (21) in housing (16) as an assembly.26. Put gear (19) and washer (18) in position on the spider assemblies. If housing (22) or bevel gear (24) was replaced, it will be necessary to ream the holes in the flange of the housing to match the holes in the bevel gear.27. Put housing
