Remove the front tires and rims. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tire and Rim - Remove and Install".
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil.Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system.Make sure all of the work tools have been lowered to the ground, and the oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.
Note: Put identification on all lines, hoses, wires, and tubes for installation purposes. Plug all lines, hoses, and tubes in order to prevent fluid loss. Plug all lines, hoses, and tubes in order to prevent contaminants from entering the system.
Release the hydraulic system pressure. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Hydraulic System Pressure - Release".
Drain the oil from the fixed axle housing and from the final drive assemblies. The capacity of the axle is 136 L (35.9 US gal). Place the oil in a suitable container for storage or for disposal.

Remove eight bolts (1) from the front drive shaft. Remove the spider and bearing (2) from the front drive shaft. Secure the drive shaft away from the fixed axle.

Remove hose assembly (3) from the junction block.

Typical Example
Attach Tooling (A) to the left side and the right side of the fixed axle.
Attach a hoist, Tooling (B), and suitable lifting chains to Tooling (A) .
Remove twelve nuts, the washers, and bolts (5) from each side of the fixed axle.
Lower fixed axle (6) to the ground. The weight of the fixed axle is 3266 kg (7200 lb).
