Pinion ArrangementBefore the pinion assembly is installed into the differential housing, the correct pinion depth must be established. Pinion depth is controlled by the thickness of shims (9). The formula used to obtain the shim thickness is: shim pack (9) = W + X.

Pinion Number, Dimension1. Note the number etched on the end of the pinion gear (6). If the number appears as 112.98 or similar then subtract this number from a nominal of 113.00 mm. Record this number as dimension (W). Example 1: W=113.00-112.98= +0.02 mm. Example 2: W=113.00-113.10= -0.10 mm.If the number appears as +0.10 or similar number then change the number from a positive to a negative and record this number as dimension (W).
Example 3: W = -(-0.02 mm) = +0.02 mm. Example 4: W = - (+0.10 mm) = -0.10 mm.

Depth Gauge Set-Up2. Position tooling (B) on a surface plate with the datum bar attached with the two bolts as shown in Illustration (3). Place 6V-6106 Indicator into the "slot" on the datum bar. The 5P-4161 Contact Point should pass through the smaller hole in the datum bar. Set the dial indicator to "zero". Tooling (B) includes all items and quantities marked under "B" on the "Tools Needed" Chart.
