Accidental engine starting can cause injury or death to personnel working on the equipment.To avoid accidental engine starting, disconnect the battery cable from the negative (−) battery terminal. Completely tape all metal surfaces of the disconnected battery cable end in order to prevent contact with other metal surfaces which could activate the engine electrical system.Place a Do Not Operate tag at the Start/Stop switch location to inform personnel that the equipment is being worked on.
Personal injury can result from flame cutting or welding on painted areas.The effect of gasses from burned paint is a hazard to the person doing the cutting or welding.Do not flame cut or weld on painted areas.
Personal injury or death can result from fumes, gases and ultraviolet rays from the weld arc.Welding can cause fumes, burn skin and produce ultraviolet rays.Keep your head out of the fumes. Use ventilation, exhaust at the arc, or both, to keep fumes and gases from your breathing area. Wear eye, ear and body protection before working.Protect yourself and others; read and understand this warning. Fumes and gases can be dangerous to your health. Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Welding Process
The following welding processes are acceptable for this procedure:
Gas metal arc welding (GMAW). Use 75% Argon / 25% Carbon Dioxide shielding gas at a flow rate of 35 +/- 5 cubic feet per hour (28 liters/hour). Use an AWS Class ER70S-3 or ER70S-6 welding electrode.
Flux cored arc welding (FCAW). Use 75% Argon / 25% Carbon Dioxide shielding gas at a flow rate of 35 +/- 5 cubic feet per hour (28 liters/hour). Use an AWS Class E71T-1 welding electrode.
Shielded metal arc welding (SMAW). Use E7018 electrodes in this DCEP process.
Air arc gouging (DCEP). Use 5/16 inch diameter rods for carbon arc.Note: Fasten
