All Caterpillar Machines Powered By 3054 Machine EnginesDescription of Change: Two new element assemblies are available with jacket water heater groups that are installed in machines powered by a 3054 Machine Engine.Adaptable To: New 127-8604 Jacket Water Heater Element Assembly is available for installation with 127-8603 Jacket Water Heater Group for use with a 120 volt (750 watt) grounded power source. New 127-8606 Jacket Water Heater Element Assembly is available for installation with 127-8605 Jacket Water Heater Group for use with a 240 volt (750 watt) grounded power source. Both jacket water heaters are sized for use in a core plug bore of 31.782 0.032 mm (1.2513 0.0013 in).
The 133-3413 Jacket Water Heater Seal Kit is also available for both element assemblies.
Installation:The following procedure is recommended for installation of these jacket water heater assemblies.
Typical Jacket Water Heater Group: (1) Element Assembly. (2) Cord Assembly. (3) Cap Assembly.1. Allow the engine to cool.2. Drain the coolant.3. Remove the freeze plug from the third core plug hole located on the left side of the engine (as seen from the front of the engine).4. Clean the freeze plug bore in the block until it is smooth and free of any deposits or contamination. If the outside edge of the block bore is not chamfered, file down the sharp edges.5. Remove the yellow plastic dust cap assembly (3) from the heater.6. Insert the element assembly (1) into the core plug hole. The element assembly should be inserted only deep enough so that the tanged washers do not engage the bore.Rotate the element assembly so it does not touch the inner surface of the block. Mark the block and the heater so the heater may again be inserted in this position.
7. Remove the heater. Apply a light coat of ethylene glycol to the heater O-ring and the block bore.8. Place the heater into the block bore while indexing the element assembly with the mark from Step 6.9. Place a 11/4inch deep socket over the threaded end. Insert the heater by evenly and lightly tapping the socket until the heater adapter flange bottoms against the block. Attempting to wedge the heater into the bore will usually result in skewing of the heater and cutting of the O-ring. This procedure, however, may be attempted if space requirements demand this method. If this method is used, DO NOT preload one side.10. Install the cap assembly (3) onto the heater.11. Fill the engine with coolant. Start the engine and check for leaks. Continue to operate the engine until the operating temperature is reached in order to assure that all air is purged from the cooling system.12. When the operating temperature is reached, stop the engine. Allow the engine to cool.13. Check the coolant level in the radiator or expansion tank. Top off the coolant as necessary.14. Install the cord assembly (2). Energize the heater. Always unplug the heater before starting the engine. Cord Assemblies must be ordered separately from the element assemblies in the following
