Remove Camshaft Rear Gear & Balancer

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "Tools And Shop Products Guide", NENG2500 for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates. 1. Put timing marks (1) in alignment. Both the 3408 and 3412 engines have a camshaft rear gear, but only the 3408 has a balancer gear.2. Loosen four bolts (3) approximately 6.4 mm (.25 in). Install tool (A). Use tool (A) to loosen camshaft rear gear (2) from the camshaft. Remove tool (A) and four bolts (3).
If balancer gear (4) is in a position similar to that shown in this illustration, balancer gear (4) will move when camshaft rear gear (2) is removed. To prevent personal injury, hold balancer gear with your hand when camshaft rear gear (2) is removed.
3. Remove camshaft rear gear (2). 4. Remove bolt (5), plate and balancer gear (4). 5. Use Tooling (B) and a press to remove the bearing from the balancer gear (6). 6. Remove four bolts (7) and shaft (8) from the cylinder block.Install Camshaft Rear Gear & Balancer
1. Install shaft (1) and four bolts (2) on the cylinder block. 2. Use Tooling (A) to install the bearing in the balancer gear. Install the bearing so that the bearing joint is on the weight side of the gear within 20 degrees of the centerline as shown. Install the bearing so that it is 1.3 mm (.05 in) from the surface on the side of the balancer opposite surface. 3. Put clean engine oil on the inside diameter of the bearing in the balancer gear. Install balancer gear (5) and plate (4). Make sure the side of the balancer gear (5) with the weight is toward the cylinder block. Install the bolt (3) that holds the balancer gear in position on the shaft. Check to make sure that there is 0.15 to 0.36 mm (.006 to .014 in) end play between the balancer gear and the shaft. Make sure timing marks (8) are in alignment when camshaft rear gear (6) is installed on the camshaft.4. Install camshaft rear gear (6) on the camshaft. Install bolts (7). Tighten bolts (7) to a torque of 27 4 N m (20 3 lb ft).End By:a. install flywheel housing
