For the Coil Short in Injector codes (651-6, 652-6, 653-6, and 654-6) use the following troubleshooting.
Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Measure Resistance
A. Place key switch in OFF position, unplug Engine ECM connector for the machine side (P1/J1) to check the harness ground.
B. Measure the resistance at the wiring harness side for 39, 59, 79, and 80 and the chassis ground.
1.5 Ohms or Lower
Result: Resistance is 1.5 ohms or lower.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
Result: Resistance is not 1.5 ohms or lower.
Repair: Troubleshoot the cause of the open circuit.
2. Check for Defects
A. Place the key switch in OFF position, unplug the Engine ECM connector for the engine side (P2/J2).
B. Check ECM pins for any defects (bent pins, corrosion, etc).
C. Check wiring harness connector for defects (poor contact, socket pushed in, etc).
Defects
Result: There are no defects.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Result: There are defects.
Repair: Repair or replace the defective components.
3. Measure Resistance
A. Place key switch in OFF position, unplug both the ECM connectors to check the Engine ECM grounds.
B. Use an insulation resistance tester (megohmmeter tester), to measure resistance between pins 47/67 or 43/63 on Engine Harness side (P2/J2) and ground on Machine Harness side (P1/J1) at 39, 59, 79, and 80.
10 Megohms or Higher
Result: The resistance is 10 megohms or higher.

Table 5
Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Disconnect the Engine Harness from the ECM
A. With the key switch in the OFF, measure the resistance at the engine ECM connector between the common ground and injector drivers.
Refer to the Table 3 for a list of connector terminal numbers.
This checks the resistance of the harness and the injector. The resistance should be 1.5 ohms or lower.
Engine Harness
Result: The resistance is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: The resistance is NOT OK.
For the C3.8 proceed to Test Step 2.
For the C3.3B proceed to Test Step 3.
2. For the C3.8 Measure the Resistance at the Connector to the Valve Cover to Check the Harness and Injectors Under the Valve Cover
1.5 Ohms or Lower
Result: The resistance is within the specification.
If the resistance is within specification, the problem is in the engine harness and should be repaired or replaced.
Result: The resistance is NOT within the specification.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
3. Check the resistance between the injector terminals.
A. The resistance between injector terminals should be 0.35 to 0.55 Ohms
0.35 to 0.55 Ohms
Result: If OK the problem if in the harness. Before replacing the harness, check that the ten-pin connector into the valve cover is fully engaged and that the pins are not bent.
Result: If not OK contact the
