Schematic of the Bucket Cylinder Extend Solenoid
This diagnostic code is associated with the Bucket Cylinder Extend solenoid. The FMI 03 diagnostic code means that the Machine ECM detected the voltage is above normal. The possible causes of this failure are listed here:
The solenoid energizer circuit is shorted to +battery.
The Machine ECM has failed. This condition is unlikely. When this failure occurs, a warning is displayed on the operator monitor and the Machine ECM disables the hydraulic circuit.Note: The following test procedure may create other diagnostic codes. Ignore these created diagnostic codes and clear these failures when the original failure is corrected.Test Step 1. CHECK THE SOLENOID ENERGIZER CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO +BATTERY.
Turn the key start switch to the OFF position.
Disconnect the suspect solenoid from the machine harness.
Disconnect the machine harness connectors from the Cat® Grade Control ECM.
Measure the voltage at the circuits that are listed here:
Contact 1 (wire K768-BU(Blue)) of the machine harness connector for the solenoid to frame ground.
Contact 2 (wire K769-GY(Grey)) of the machine harness connector for the solenoid to frame ground.
Contact 1 (wire K768-BU(Blue)) to contact 2 (wire K769-GY(Grey)) of the machine harness connector for the solenoid.Expected Result:Each voltage measurement is approximately 0.0 0.5 DCV.Results:
OK - Each voltage measurement is approximately 0.0 0.5 DCV. The voltage is correct. Proceed to test step 2.
NOT OK - Each voltage measurement is greater than approximately 0.0 0.5 DCV. The voltage is not correct. The machine harness is shorted to +battery. Proceed to test step 2.Test Step 2. CHECK IF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE REMAINS.
Inspect the contacts of the harness connectors and clean the contacts.
Reconnect all machine harness connectors.
Turn the key start switch to the ON position.
Clear any active events that are displayed on the operator monitor.
Operate the machine.
Check if the diagnostic code is displayed on the operator monitor. The diagnostic information may also be viewed with the Cat® ET.Expected Result:The diagnostic code for the solenoid is NOT present on the operator monitor. Results:
YES - The diagnostic code is NOT present. The diagnostic code does not exist currently. The initial failure was probably caused by a poor electrical connection or a short at one of the harness connectors that was disconnected and reconnected. Resume normal machine operation.STOP
NO - The diagnostic code has NOT been corrected. The machine ECM has failed. A failure of the ECM is unlikely. Exit this procedure and perform this procedure again.Repair: If the cause of the failure is not found, replace the Machine ECM. See Testing And Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".STOP
