Information:
You must read and understand the warnings and instructions contained in the Safety section of this manual before performing any operation or maintenance procedures.Cooling System Coolant
Change Coolant/Clean System
Do not change the coolant until you read and understand the material in the "Cooling System Specifications" section.
Drain the coolant earlier whenever the coolant is dirty or foaming is observed. 1. Remove the radiator cap slowly to relieve pressure. 2. Open the radiator drain valve. Drain the coolant. 3. Remove the coolant drain plug from the brake and torque converter oil cooler. 4. Remove the drain plug from the engine oil cooler. 5. Remove the coolant drain plug from the air compressor block. Clean and install all of the drain plugs.6. Close the drain valve. Fill the system with clean water and a 6 to 10% concentration of cooling system cleaner.7. Start and run the engine for 1 1/2 hours. Stop the engine and drain the cleaning solution.8. Flush the system with water, with the engine stopped, until the draining water is clear.9. Close the drain valve. Do not add supplemental coolant additive or change element at this time, unless you are not using Caterpillar Antifreeze which contains additive.Clean the Cooling System Relief Valve
Clean or replace the relief valve if the system overheats or loss of coolant is observed.1. Remove the radiator cap slowly to relieve pressure. 2. Remove the bolts from the valve and remove the valve assembly. 3. Inspect valve (1), valve seals (2) and gasket (3). Replace if necessary.4. Inspect valve cover (4) and mounting bolts (5).5. Install the relief valve assembly.Filling the Cooling System
1. Install the coolant conditioner element. See "Coolant Conditioner Element" in the "Every 250 Service Hours" section.2. Add antifreeze solution. See "Refill Capacities."3. Add coolant slowly to help avoid air locks, 20 liters (5 U.S. gallons) per minute. Maintain the level above the level indicator plate in the bottom of the radiator fill pipe.4. Start and run the engine with the filler cap removed. Allow the coolant to warm and the level to stabilize. Check for leaks. 5. Inspect condition of filler cap gasket. Replace if damaged. Install the filler cap.Clean Outside of Radiator Fins
Compressed air, high pressure water or steam can be used to remove dust, leaves and general debris from radiator fins. The use of compressed air is preferred.
