Perform the machine test prior to removing thepump from the machine in order to determine that the seals in the glandare in good condition.
Machine Testing:
Locate the weep hole on the piston pump(implement, pilot). The weep hole can be accessed from below the machine. If a plastic plug is installed in the weep hole, or if the weep hole iscovered with tape, remove and discard the plug or tape.
If there is oil at the weep hole already, machine testing is not necessary. Proceed to "Repair Instruction ? If leakingat the weep hole is found".
Inspect or photograph the area below orin line with (on 966H) the weep hole in order to document the before testcondition.
Start the engine and run the engine at2200 rpm.
Operate the implements for approximately10 minutes. The cycle should include the following operations.
Fully rack back the bucket and fully raisethe lift arms with two abrupt stops during the lift.
Perform full dumps and fully rack backthe bucket.
Fully rack back the bucket and fully powerdown the lift arms with two abrupt stops while the lift arms are beinglowered.
Continue operations until the hydraulicoil temperature has reached 60°C.
Stop the engine and inspect the area belowor in line with the weep hole to determine whether or not any oil has comeout of the weep hole.
Repair Instruction ? If leaking atthe weep hole is not found
Refer to the Disassembly & Assemblyprocedure for the machine and remove the pump from the machine.
Check the engagement of the retainer ringby placing the go/no-go gauge (1) into the inner diameter of the retainerring. If gauge (1) fits flat against the wall of the seal gland, the retainerring is installed properly. Do not perform the repair instruction. In Illustration1, gauge (1) indicates that the retainer ring is correctly installed. InIllustration 2, gauge (1) indicates that the retainer ring is incorrectlyinstalled. If the retainer ring is incorrectly installed, proceed withthe repair instruction.
Illustration 1 ? The gage fits inside of thering and flush or below the housing Illustration 2 ? The gage does not fit insideof the retaining ring and cannot fit flush with the housing
Use bearing driver (2) to push the seal glandfurther into the housing.
Illustration 3
Mark the ends of the retainer ring with a markerin order to record the starting position of the ring. Refer to Illustration4.
Illustration 4
Use a 5 mm (0.20 inch) punch (3) in order to engagethe retainer ring. If the punch is pointed, it will not engage the retainingring. If the punch is square, it may cause damage to the retaining ringor the housing. Refer to Illustration 5. Gently tap one end of the ringin order to move the ring 4 mm (0.16 inch) in the groove.
Illustration 5
Gently tap the other end of the retainer ringin order to move the ring back to the original starting position. Referto Illustration 6. The ends of the ring should line up with the marks thatwere made in the earlier step.
