Required Tools
Part Number     Description     Quantity
FT-2615     Rolling Torque Bar     1
6V-7820     Torque Multiplier     1
4C-8501     Spanner Wrench     1
Measure the torque that is needed to rotate housing (2). This is the seal drag torque. Record the measured seal drag torque. Measure the seal drag torque by one of the methods that follow.
Illustration 2 g00305001
Typical Illustration (D) Rolling torque bar
To measure seal drag torque, fasten rolling torque bar (D) across the axle housing. Rolling torque bar (D) will center the mounting face of the housing. Place the torque wrench on the bolt or the nut at the center of rolling torque bar (D). While you turn housing (2) with the torque wrench, record the reading on the torque wrench. The torque wrench reading is the seal drag torque.

Typical Illustration
To measure seal drag torque, place the torque wrench on a bolt that is installed in the bolt circle of housing (2). While you turn housing (2) with the torque wrench, record the reading on the torque wrench. Use the following formula to calculate the actual seal drag torque:SDT = (C x (B + A)) / B"SDT" is the actual seal drag torque in N m."C" is the torque wrench reading in N m."B" is the length of the torque wrench in meters."A" is the bolt circle radius of axle housing (2) in meters. This is equal to 0.229 m (9.016 inch).

While you turn housing (2), tighten nut (3). Tighten nut (3) until the torque wrench reading equals the axle bearing preload rolling torque plus the actual seal drag torque. Use the seal drag torque that was recorded in Step 8.Axle bearing preload rolling torque New bearings ... 9 to 16 N m (7 to 12 lb ft) Used bearings ... 4.5 to 8 N m (3.5 to 6 lb ft)
Measure the axle bearing preload rolling torque plus the actual seal drag torque with one of the methods that follow.

Tighten nut (3) until the torque wrench reading equals the axle bearing preload rolling torque plus the actual seal drag torque. Use the following formula to calculate the required torque wrench reading. This formula is used in order to measure axle bearing preload rolling torque at the bolt
