Disassembly
Disconnect the rear drive shaft. Refer to the appropriate Disassembly and Assembly module.

Remove bolts (1) and the washers.
Install two suitable forcing screws into bearing cage (2) to remove the yoke and bearing cage assembly.

Remove O-ring seal (6).
Remove locknut (4) and spacer (5).
Remove yoke (3).

Remove two bolts (11) and the washers. Separate bearing cage (2) from bearing retainer (10).
Remove lip seal (7) and O-ring seal (9) from bearing retainer (10). The lip seal will be damaged on removal. Make a note of the orientation of the lip seal to the bearing retainer for assembly.
Use a suitable press and remove bearings (8).Assembly
Clean all parts and inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new Caterpillar parts as replacement.

Install new bearings (8) into bearing cage (2).
Use a suitable seal installer to install a new lip seal (7) into bearing retainer (10). Refer to the note that was made during the disassembly procedure for the correct orientation of the lip seal.
Install O-ring seal (9) onto bearing retainer (10). Lubricate the O-ring seal with the lubricant that is being sealed.
Assemble bearing retainer (2) to bearing cage (7) and secure the parts together with bolts (11) and the washers.

Typical example
Lubricate the bearings and the lip seal with the lubricant that is being sealed. Install yoke (3). Secure the parts together with spacer (5) and locknut (4). Refer to "Locknuts" for the appropriate procedure.
Install O-ring seal (6). Lubricate the O-ring seal with the lubricant that is being sealed.

Install the yoke and bearing cage assembly into the axle before installing bolts (1) and the washers that secure the assembly in position.
Connect the rear drive shaft. Refer to the appropriate Disassembly and Assembly module.Locknuts

Illustration 8 g01034401Install nut lock (4b). Clean the threads of bearing locknut (4a) and the yoke before applying 9S-3263 Thread Lock Compound to the threads of the bearing locknut. Tighten the bearing locknut to a torque of 200 40 N m (150 30 lb ft) and at the same time line up the grooves on the bearing locknut with the tabs on the nut lock. When the bearing locknut is correctly tightened and aligned with the nut lock, bend the tabs that are in line with the grooves in the bearing locknut to lock the two parts together.196-7243 Locknut
Illustration 9 g01034402Clean the threads of locknut (4a) and the yoke before applying 9S-3263 Thread Lock Compound to the threads of the locknut. Tighten the locknut to a torque of 200 40 N m (150 30 lb ft) before tightening setscrews (4b) to a torque of 7 1 N m (62 9 lb in).
