Introduction
This special instruction provides the information that is necessary to replace the steering column gas spring assembly that is used in all of the listed machine models.Do not perform any of the procedures until you have read the information in this publication.Note: This procedure cannot be done while the steering column is still mounted in the machine.Required Parts and Tools

Place the tilt steering column at a zero degree tilt (upper part of housing in line with lower part of housing).
Remove the steering column from the machine. Refer to the applicable service manual for your machine for the correct removal procedure.

Put the tilt steering column (5) in a horizontal position, as shown.

Position removal tool (2) under dowel pin (3) that holds the lower end of the gas spring to the lower housing of the steering column, as shown.
Use Tooling (A) or a suitable press in order to drive dowel pin (3) partially out of the lower housing.

Reposition removal tool (2). Drive dowel pin (3) out of the lower housing enough to allow gas spring assembly (1) to swing free of the lower housing, as shown.
Complete the removal of dowel pin (3) and discard the dowel pin.

Use Tooling (B) to remove two shoulder screws (6) that hold gas spring assembly (1) to the upper housing of the steering column. A shoulder screw is on each side of the upper housing. Discard the two shoulder screws.
Remove the gas spring assembly from the steering column.Installation of the Gas Spring Assembly
Position the new gas spring assembly into the upper housing and the lower housing of the steering column.
Align the dowel pin hole in the lower end of the gas spring assembly with the dowel pin holes in the ears of the lower housing.
Put removal tool (2) under the ear of the lower housing for support. Use Tool (A) or a suitable press to install new dowel pin (3). There should be 5 1 mm (0.2 0.04 inch) sticking out on either side of the ears on the lower housing after installing the dowel pin.Note: Be careful not to deflect the ears on the lower housing while you are installing the dowel pin.

Align the threaded holes on the upper end of gas spring assembly (1) with the holes for the shoulder bolts on the upper housing of steering column (5) .Note: The gas spring might need to be adjusted in order to achieve proper alignment of the holes.
Use Tool (B) to install new shoulder screws (6). Install a shoulder screw on each side. Use Tool (C) to torque the two shoulder
