Remove the front counterweights.
Remove the front guard.
Remove the front tires and rims.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil.Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system.Make sure all of the attachments have been lowered, oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

Remove bolts (2) to disconnect front drive shaft (1) from the fixed front axle.
Remove bolts (4) and remove spider assembly (3).

Disconnect hose assembly (5).

Attach Tooling (A) a suitable lifting device to fixed front axle (6). The weight of fixed front axle (6) is approximately 1736 kg (3830 lb).
Remove nuts (7), the bolts, and the washers. Use Tooling (A) the suitable lifting device to lower fixed front axle (6) onto Tooling (B) (not shown), for removal from the machine.Installation Procedure
Install fixed front axle (6) in the reverse order of removal.
Tighten nuts (7) to a torque of 350 50 N m (258 37 lb ft). Tighten nuts (7) an additional 120° 10°.
Tighten bolts (4) to a torque of 150 15 N m (111 11 lb ft).
Completely seat the u-joint by using bolts (2). Tighten bolts (2) in an "X" pattern. Remove and discard bolts (2).
Install new bolts (2). Tighten bolts (2) in an "X" pattern to a torque of 150 15 N m (111 11 lb ft).
Retorque bolts (2) in an "X" pattern to a torque of 150 15 N m (111 11 lb ft).
