Backhoe LoadersThere have been inquiries about acceptable engine oil consumption on backhoe loaders. The engine manufacturer considers oil consumption to be excessive when the amount of oil consumed is one percent or greater than the amount of fuel used. Use the method that follows to determine if engine oil consumption is excessive.
Since initial oil consumption on a new engine may be high, make sure the engine has accumulated several hundred hours before conducting an oil consumption test.1. Drain and refill the engine crankcase with the recommended (measured) amount of oil.2. Fill the fuel tank.3. Record the amount of fuel and engine oil that is added until the next oil change interval.4. At the end of the test, fill the fuel tank and add enough oil to bring the engine oil level to the "Full" mark on the dipstick.
