1. It is possible to locate and weld the tips with the wheel assembly on the machine. It is recommended that the wheel assembly be removed from the machine whenever possible.2. Remove the old tips from the wheel assembly. Clean and grind the area where the welds are to be made.Move the location of the new tips enough to expose the unworn areas that were underneath the previous tips.3. With a sharp razor blade, cut out the tip corners outlined on the template. Position the template on the edge of the wheel. Using chalk, pencil, paint or dye, mark the corner locations of tips 1, 2 and 3 on the wheel. Line up tip 1 of the template over the corner locations of tip 2 marked on the wheel. Mark the corners of tips 4 and 5. Finish locating the remaining tips in the first and second rows.To establish the third row of tips, place the template outlines of tips 1 and 2 over the corners of tips 3 and 5 that have been marked on the wheel. Continue around and across the wheel until all tip locations have been marked. The pattern should develop as shown in the following illustration. 4. As a precaution, preheat the tips in the area to be welded to 200°C (392°F) prior to welding.5. If welding tips with a semi-automatic wire feed, use E70T-5 (extra low hydrogen) cored wire with CO2 gas shielding (dual shielding process). Make a 10 mm (.4 in) fillet weld with a 1.5 mm (.06 in) penetration only at the ends of the tips.Alternate weld passes between opposite ends of the tips until the desired weld thickness is achieved (2 to 3 passes).6. If stick welding is used, use dry, low hydrogen E7018 weld rod. Make a 12 mm (.5 in) fillet weld only at the ends of the tips. Remove only enough weld rod for one hour of use. The moisture level of exposed low hydrogen electrodes can be too high and cause weld cracking.
