8. If the backlash is insufficient back off adjusting nut (1) and tighten adjusting nut (10) by the same amount. Ensure both adjusting nuts finish in a lock position with the correct backlash established.9. Measure the torque required to turn the input shaft slowly and continuously. The torque should be 5.8-7.8N m (51-69lb.in.). If necessary tighten adjusting nut(1) to the next lock position to establish the correct torque. Both adjusting nuts should finish in a lock position with the correct backlash and turning torque established.10. Check the tooth contact by lightly brushing the bevel gear teeth with red lead or prussian blue and turning the input shaft in both directions. The correct tooth contact pattern starts near the toe of the gear and extends about 30% of the tooth length. The pattern should not extend more 50% of the tooth length. It is permissable for the contact area to be slightly greater on the concave face. The correct tooth contact pattern is shown in illustration A.11. If the contact area is toward the toe of the convex face and toward the heel of the concave face (as shown in illustration B) the input shaft needs moving toward the bevel gear centerline by reducing the thickness of shims (2). Check the bevel gear backlash, adjust if necessary and re-check the contact pattern.12. If the contact area is toward the heel of the convex face and toward the toe of the concave face (as shown in illustration C) the input shaft needs moving away from the bevel gear centerline by increasing the thickness of shims (2). Check the bevel gear backlash, adjust if necessary and re-check the contact pattern.13. Clean off the prussian blue or red lead from the gears.14. Having established the correct backlash and tooth contact, fully tighten the bolts in the bearing caps to their specified torque.
