The portion of this bracket inside the gooseneck can crack and eventually break, resulting in serious damage to the entire gooseneck. Caterpillar desires to repair and reinforce the bracket. There will be no charge for this repair. Contact your local Caterpillar dealer immediately and schedule a time to have this service performed. The repair time to do this service is about 20 hours. Materials Needed 1" Plate-High strength Structural; 6" x 18" Use steel that meets ASTM572 (45,000 psi yield). Can be Tri-Ten, Cor-Ten, INX-50 or EX-Ten50. TI steel exceeds this yield strength and can be used if readily available. 0.25" Plate * - Hot Rolled Steel; 1" x 36" for backup strip 0.38" Plate * - Hot Rolled Steel; 2" x 14" for backup strip 0.25" Plate * - Hot Rolled Steel; 6" x 18" for backup plate * ASTM-A36 (36,000 psi yield strength) Weld Wire or E7018 Electrodes Caterpillar Yellow or Finish Color Paint Template for Access Hole - see sheet (A) at end of Procedure Template for Backup Plate Under Steering Bracket and For Reinforcement Plate - see Sheet (B) at end of Procedure Weld Specifications 1.
