Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the disassembly procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.Note: Put identification marks on all lines, on all hoses, on all harness assemblies, and on all tubes for installation purposes. Plug all lines, hoses, and tubes. This helps to prevent fluid loss and this helps to keep contaminants from entering the system.
If equipped, remove the rear PTO shaft.

Install a suitable lifting device and Tooling (A) onto the transmission and torque converter (1) . Position the transmission and the torque converter onto Tooling (B) . The weight of transmission and torque converter (1) is approximately 680 kg (1500 lb).

Disconnect harness assemblies (2) and (3) .

Disconnect harness assembly (4) .

Remove bolts (5) and cover (6) .

Remove magnetic filter (7) and screen (8) .

Remove bolts (9) and oil pan (10) .

Note: Bolt (12A) will be removed later.
Remove tube assemblies (15) and (16) . Disconnect harness assembly (13) and remove oil level sensor (14) . Remove bolts (18) and housing (17) . Remove bolts (11) and pump (12) .

Remove plug (19) and bolt (20) .Note: Torque converter (21) is no longer secured to the housing.

Attach Tooling (C) and a suitable lifting device to Tooling (A) . The weight of torque converter (21) is approximately 204 kg (450 lb). Remove bolt (12A) from Step 8. Remove bolts (22) and torque converter (21) from transmission (23) .
