Information:

8. Rotate wheel assembly (2) to seat the wheel bearing rollers against the cone back face rib.9. To seat the parts, tighten wheel bearing adjusting nut (8) to 600 N m (440 lb ft) while rotating wheel assembly (2).10. Loosen wheel bearing adjusting nut (8). The Rolling Torque method is used to check the wheel bearing adjustment. Using a torque wrench placed on a bolt on stud (9), rotate wheel assembly (3) and adjust nut (6) until the specified torque is obtained. In order to obtain correct torque measurements the torque wrench must be held 8 inches from the square drive.11. Install a bolt on stud (9) and tighten.12. Using a torque wrench on bolt (9) rotate wheel assembly (2). Grip the torque wrench 8 inches from the square drive. Record the rolling torque required to continuously turn the wheel. This is the seal drag rolling torque.13. Tighten wheel bearing adjusting nut (8) to 150 N m (110 lb ft) while rotating wheel assembly (2).14. Move wheel bearing adjusting nut (8) to the nearest locking position (tighten or loosen).15. Tighten wheel bearing adjusting nut (8) 1/8 turn (45 degrees).16. Using a torque wrench on bolt (9) rotate wheel assembly (2). Grip the torque wrench 8 inches from the square drive. Record the rolling torque required to continuously turn the wheel. This is the rolling torque for the wheel assembly.17. Subtract the seal drag rolling torque obtained in Step 12 from the wheel assembly rolling torque obtained in Step 16. This is the wheel bearing preload rolling torque.18. The wheel bearing preload rolling torque should be 8.5 3 N m (75 25 lb in) for new bearings or 5 2 N m (45 18 lb in) for used bearings.19. Install lock bolts (5).20. If the rolling torque is not within the specified ranges, disassemble the wheel bearings and inspect all parts. If desired the actual wheel bearing rolling torque can be measured at the center of the wheel. Fasten a strap iron, which has a nut in the center, to the wheel assembly so that the center nut is aligned with the center of the wheel. With a torque wrench on the center nut record the rolling torque required to continuously turn the wheel. This actual wheel bearing rolling torque should be 18 6 N m (160 50 lb in) for new bearings or 10 3 N m (90 27 lb in) for used bearings.
