Contact your local Caterpillar dealer immediately to schedule this service. The dealer will advise you of the time required to complete this service.
Please refer the dealer to their Service Letter dated 21Jan2009 when scheduling this service.
We regret the inconvenience this may cause you, but urge you to have this service performed as soon as possible to prevent unscheduled downtime.

Rework Procedure
INSPECTION PROCEDURE
In order to inspect the length of the 317-1452 Rod Assembly, completely lower the lift arm (boom) of the machine and rack the bucket back into a full rack back position. With the bucket in a full, racked back position, if the "Rack-Back-Stops" are in contact with the loader frame lift arm (boom), then the rod assembly is the correct length. If there is a slight gap between the loader frame lift arm (boom) and the bucket stops, it will be necessary to measure the distance between the gland, or head seam (the end of the cylinder tube assembly) and the center line of the rod eye pin (see Image 1.1.1). If this dimension is 740 mm, then the 317-1452 Rod Assembly should be replaced with a new 338-7395 Rod Assembly. If this dimension is 755 mm, then the 317-1452 Rod Assembly is the correct length and the machine may be released to the customer.

REWORK PROCEDURE
Replace the existing 317-1452 Rod Assembly with a new 338-7395 Rod Assembly. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly Manual, RENR9765, "Tilt Cylinder-Remove and Install" in order to replace the rod assembly and all of the seals in the cylinder group.
Once the correct rod assembly and all of the seals have been installed and tested, the machine can be re-commissioned to the customer.
