Right Side of Machine (1) Tamper pump (2) Pressure compensator and flushing spools (3) Tamper solenoidTamper pump (1) is located at the right side of the engine compartment. The right engine compartment door provides access to this component. Tamper pump (1), part of the lower left pump stack, is splined to the right hand propel pump. The tamper pump is an axial piston pump with a variable displacement. Pump displacement is controlled by tamper solenoid (3). The tamper solenoid provides proportional control of the pump displacement. The tamper solenoid is controlled by the screed ECM.Tamper pump (1) is equipped with pressure compensator and flushing spools (2). The pressure compensator spool limits the maximum pump supply pressure to 26000 kPa (3771 psi). The flushing spool directs some pump supply oil into the pump case when the pump output pressure is low.

When the tamper pump is at rest, bias spring (4) forces swashplate (5) to the maximum angle. Engine rotation turns pump input shaft (10), which then rotates the rotating group. The rotating group contains barrel assembly (13) and pistons (12). The pistons rotate with the barrel assembly. Piston slipper pads (11) allow the pistons to follow the angle of the swashplate.As slipper pads (11) follow the angle of swashplate (5), pistons (12) move in and out of barrel assembly (13). As a piston moves out of the barrel assembly, oil from the hydraulic tank is drawn into the piston chamber. As a piston moves into the barrel assembly, oil is forced through the outlet port in port plate (14). This oil flows into supply passage (15) and is sent to displacement control spool (8) .Initially, large feedback spring (7) forces displacement control spool (8) to move toward tamper solenoid (3). When the tamper solenoid is not energized, plunger (18) is fully retracted, and the displacement control spool can freely move on the plunger. In this initial state, small
