Introduction
The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.Problem
Engines may leak oil through the 331-8554 Oil Pan Gasket and 331-8555 Gasket at 190 service hours. This failure is caused by the block/pan motion exceeding the fiber gasket capability.Solution
Do not operate or work on this product unless you have read and understood the instruction and warnings in the relevant Operation and Maintenance Manuals and relevant service literature. Failure to follow the instructions or heed the warnings could result in injury or death. Proper care is your responsibility.
Part number 143-9508 Epoxy Adhesive has been discontinued. Complete the sealing process below using Loctite® E-05CL Clear Two Part Epoxy.Refer to PEGJ0075 for more information. This document can be found at the following address:https://cmic.cat.com/
Spray brake cleaner to clean the top joint area of the engine where the flywheel housing meets the cylinder block to pan joint leak area to be sealed with brake cleaner or similar solvent.
A small brass/wire brush may be needed to remove the excessive amounts of oil/dirt build-up. Leave no oil on the surface.
Use Scotchbrite and wire brushes to remove paint as needed. Remove all oil, paint, and sealant at least 30 mm (1.2 inch) from the surfaces at the housing to block joint.Note: Most break cleaners do remove some paint, which is preferred.
Spray a liberal coat of electrical cleaner and allow the cleaner to dry completely. Use a heat gun and make sure that the area is dry.Note: The goal is to have a rough surface which is clean and free from paint and oil completely to ensure the epoxy will adhere and seal the joint.
Allow the surface to cool to room temperature.
Apply the epoxy in a 25 mm (1 inch) wide bead that is 6.35 mm (0.25 inch) thick, extending beyond the leak area.Note: Reducing the length of the mixer nozzle to increase bead size will require additional manual mixing of product and is not recommended.Note: The end goal is to have a thick and wide area of epoxy applied to a clean rough surface.
Allow the epoxy to cure per the instructions, which may take up to 24 hours.
