Information:
You must read and understand the warnings and instructions contained in the Safety section of this manual before performing any operation or maintenance procedures.Cooling System Coolant (DEAC)
This machine was filled at the factory with Caterpillar Extended Life Coolant (ELC). The following information pertains to machines which have been subsequently filled with Caterpillar Diesel Engine Antifreeze/Coolant (DEAC) or a commercial equivalent. The following also applies to earlier machines which were factory filled with DEAC.To determine if your machine was factory filled with ELC, look for a film on the radiator or on the radiator overflow bottle. This film will state that your machine contains ELC. There should also be a tag attached to the radiator pressure cap on the radiator stating that your machine was factory filled with Caterpillar Extended Life Coolant (ELC). If a DEAC cooling system additive is added to a cooling system with ELC, follow the Maintenance Schedule for cooling systems with DEAC.Change Coolant/Clean System
Do not change the coolant until you read and understand the material found in the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Specifications" section. Failure to do so could result in damage to the cooling systems components.
If the coolant is dirty or if you observe any foaming in the cooling system, drain the coolant before the recommended interval. 1. Open the radiator pressure cap access cover.2. Slowly loosen the radiator pressure cap in order to relieve system pressure. Remove the pressure cap. 3. Open the radiator access door. Refer to the General Hazard Information section for information on Containing Fluid Spillage.4. Open the drain valve that is located under the radiator. Allow the coolant to drain into a suitable container.5. Close the drain valve.6. Fill the cooling system with a solution which consists of clean water and cooling system cleaner. The concentration of the cooling system cleaner should be 6 to 10 percent.7. Start the engine. Operate the engine without the radiator pressure cap until the water temperature regulator opens and the cooling system level stabilizes.8. Maintain the cooling system level to within 13 mm (.5 in) of the bottom of the filler pipe.9. Install the radiator pressure cap.10. Operate the engine for 90 minutes.11. Stop the engine.
Pressurized system: Hot coolant can cause serious burn. To open cap, stop engine, wait until radiator is cool. Then loosen cap slowly to relieve the pressure.
12. Slowly loosen the radiator pressure cap in order to relieve system pressure. Remove the pressure cap.13. Drain the cleaning solution into a suitable container.14. Flush the cooling system with water until the draining water is clear.15. Close the drain valve.16. Add the coolant solution. Refer to the following topics: * Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Specifications"* Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Refill Capacities" If using Caterpillar antifreeze, do not add the supplemental coolant additive at this time, Also, do not change the supplemental coolant additive element at this time.17. Start the engine. Operate the engine without the radiator pressure cap until the water temperature regulator opens and the coolant
