Information:

Rolling (Anti-friction) Bearings
In normal operating conditions, rolling bearings require little maintenance. To ensure reliable operation, the bearings must be greased regularly, with high-quality rolling bearing grease.Bearing Plate
All motors are supplied with bearing plates attached to the motor frame. The bearing plates provide bearing information, such as:
Bearing type
Lubricant used
Greasing interval
Greasing amountFor more details regarding information about roller bearings, refer to the motor "Bearing Plate".Note: It is essential that the information provided on the bearing plate be taken into account when operating and maintaining the motor.Greasing Intervals
Rolling bearings of electrical motors must be greased at regular intervals. The greasing interval information is found on the motor "Bearing Plate".Note: Regardless of the greasing interval, the bearings must be greased at least once per year. The greasing intervals are calculated for an operating temperature of 70° C (158° F). If the operating temperature is lower or higher than the assumed, the grease interval must be altered accordingly. Grease the bearings more often if the operational temperatures rise above, and less often if temperatures drop below 70° C (158° F).Note: An increase in the ambient temperature raises the temperature of the bearings. For every 15° C (59° F) increment above 70° C (158° F), the frequency of bearing regreasing should be doubled. If the bearing temperature operates 15° C (59° F) below 70° C (158° F), the regreasing frequency can be cut in half one time.Greasing Intervals for Motors With a Variable Frequency Drive
Higher speed operation, such as found in frequency converter applications, or lower speed with heavy load will require shorter lubrication intervals or a special lubricant. Consult with Caterpillar in such cases.Note: The designed maximum speed for the motor must not be exceeded. If the application requires operational speeds above the nameplate rating, consult with Caterpillar.Greasing the Bearings
All rolling bearings of rotating electrical motors must be greased. Refer to Operation & Maintenance Manual, SEBU8852, "Bearing Plate".The greasing can be performed either manually or with an automatic system. In either case, verification that a suitable amount of the correct grease is entering the bearing at prescribed intervals is required.Note: Grease can cause skin irritation and eye inflammation. Follow all safety precautions specified by the grease manufacturer.Manual Greasing of the Bearings
Machines suited for manual greasing are equipped with grease nipples. To prevent debris from entering the bearings, the grease nipples, and the surrounding area, must be cleaned thoroughly before greasing.Manual Greasing While the Machine Is Running
The following must be observed when attempting to grease the bearings with the motor running:
Make sure to follow all applicable personnel and equipment safety precautions
Verify that the grease to be used is suitable for the job
Clean the grease nipples and the area around the nipples
Verify that the lubrication channel is open.
Press the specified amount and type of grease into the bearing
Let the motor run 1-2 hours to ensure that all excess grease is forced out of the bearingNote: Bearing temperatures may temporarily increase during this time.Beware of all rotating parts during the greasing maintenance.Manual Greasing While the Machine Is Standing
