Note: The procedures have been listed in order of probability. Complete the following procedures in the order that is provided.Air Shutoff
If equipped, verify that the air shutoffs are operating correctly.Active Codes and Logged Codes
Certain diagnostic codes and/or engine events may cause an engine shutdown. Connect Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) and check for active codes and for logged codes. Troubleshoot any codes that are present prior to continuing with this procedure.Unstable Fuel Supply
Note: If there is an immediate engine shutdown, troubleshoot the electrical connectors before proceeding with this procedure.
Contact with high pressure fuel may cause fluid penetration and burn hazards. High pressure fuel spray may cause a fire hazard. Failure to follow these inspection, maintenance and service instructions may cause personal injury or death.
Inspect the fuel system. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Fuel System Pressure - Test" for additional information.
Cold weather adversely affects the characteristics of the fuel. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for information on improving the characteristics of the fuel during cold-weather operation.
Check fuel quality. Check the fuel tank for debris or foreign objects which may block the fuel supply.
Check the filtered fuel pressure while the engine is being cranked. If the fuel pressure is low, refer to Troubleshooting, "Fuel Pressure is Low" for details.Electrical Connections
Check for correct installation of the J1/P1 and J2/P2 connectors that are for the Electronic Control Module (ECM). Thoroughly inspect the connectors for the engine speed/timing sensors. Also, check for correct installation of all other applicable connectors. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors". Perform the "Wiggle Test" on Cat ET.
Inspect the battery wires from the ECM to the battery compartment. For specific wiring information, refer to the electrical Schematic for the application. Check the unit injector connectors and associated wiring for damage, or for intermittent problems. Check the power and ground connections to the ECM. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Power Supply - Test". Switches
Check the keyswitch input to the ECM.Check any engine shutdown switches and associated wiring. If the application is equipped with an overspeed switch, check the switch for correct operation. If equipped, verify that the crank without injection plug is installed securely.Circuit Breakers
Inspect the wires and connectors to all circuit protection for the engine. Reset the circuit breakers if the circuit breakers are tripped. Prior to returning the engine to service, determine the condition that caused the circuit breaker to trip. Perform the necessary repairs.Note: Certain devices for circuit protection may reset automatically. Verify if the application has any protection devices that reset automatically.Engine Speed/Timing
Crank the engine and observe the engine speed on the Cat ET status screen. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Speed/Timing - Test" for additional information.Note: Upon initial cranking, the status for engine speed may indicate that the engine speed signal is abnormal. This message will be replaced with an engine speed once the ECM is able to calculate a speed from the signal.
