This Program can only be administered after a failure occurs. The decision whether to apply the Program is made by the dealer. When reporting the repair, use "PS5230" as the Part Number and "7755" as the Group Number. Use "96" as the Warranty Claim Description Code and use "Z" as the SIMS Description Code.
Abnormal bearing noise from the transmission is considered a failure.
This Revised Service Letter replaces the December 20, 1996 (Revised January 1997) Service Letter. Changes have been made to the Parts Disposition.

There have been a few reports of premature failure of the 6I8641 and 6I8642 Straight Roller Bearings in the transmissions of Challenger 65C, 70C, 75C, and 85C Tractors. Although these bearings are used at either three or four locations in the transmission (depending on the model), most of the failures have occurred at the number 2 clutch location. Assembly damage at the factory might be a factor in the failures at this location.

Refer to the Service Manual as necessary. Disassemble and inspect straight roller bearings at number 1, 2, and 8 clutch locations and on input shaft.
Replace the 6I8641 and 6I8642 bearings at all locations (three or four) and return failed bearings to Caterpillar.
Reassemble using extreme care in lowering the countershaft groups into the case to prevent bearing damage.
