Remove the cylinder head. Refer to "Disassembly and Assembly", Cylinder Head - Remove.
Remove the piston cooling jets. Refer to "Disassembly and Assembly", Piston Cooling Jets - Remove.
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortenedcomponent life.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are containedduring performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product.Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containersbefore opening any compartment or disassemblingany component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, “CaterpillarDealer Service Tool Catalog” for tools and suppliessuitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillarproducts.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulationsand mandates.
Use Tooling (A) to turn the engine to access the bolts in the connecting rod cap.
Mark the cylinder number on each connecting rod and the corresponding connecting rod cap.Note: The front of the engine is opposite the flywheel end. The No. 1 cylinder is at the front of the engine on the right side. The No. 2 cylinder is on the left side.

Remove bolts (1) and connecting rod cap (2) from the connecting rod.
Remove the bearings from the connecting rod cap (2) and the connecting rod.
Illustration 2 g06121075
Push piston (3) out of the cylinder block until the piston rings are completely out of the cylinder liner.
Remove piston (3) and connecting rod assembly.
Illustration 3 g06121148
Use Tooling (B) to remove the retaining rings (5) that hold the piston pin (6).
Remove piston pin (6).
Remove piston (8) from connecting rod (4).
Use Tooling (C) to remove piston rings (7) from piston.
Clean the piston ring grooves with an acceptable ring groove tool. Refer to Reuse and Salvage Guidelines, SEBF8059, "Inspection Procedures and Specifications for Pistons".Note: Do not use a direct flame to raise the temp of the connecting rod.
Illustration 4 g06121646
.Raise the temperature of distance (Z) of the connecting rod to 218° 40°C (424° 72.°F)
Use Tooling (D) to push the new piston pin bearing (9) into the connecting rod.Refer to Special Instruction SEHS-7295–03, "Use of Piston Bearing Removal and Installation Tools" for more information.
Measure the diameter of the bore after the piston pin bearing 9 is removed. The bore should have a diameter of 70.000 0.008 mm (2.75590 0.00031 inch).
