TECHNICAL INFORMATION BULLETIN June 2, 2004
Track-Type Tractors D6M XL (5WR, 6LR)
D6N XL (CBJ, CCK)
Component Code 6150SUBJECT: D6M and D6N C-Frame Crack Weld Repair
PROBLEM:
Certain D6M and D6N Track-Type Tractors may develop cracks in the C-Frame at the tower fillet welds.
SOLUTION:
For machines with cracks initializing in the area of the tower fillet welds, follow the weld repair instructions below.
EQUIPMENT AND MATERIAL REQUIRED:
Air arc gouging torch
Carbon gouging electrode from 5.0 mm to 9.0 mm
Welding power source for stick electrodes
Welding rod AWS E7018, 1/8" (3.2 mm) and 5/32" (4.0 mm)
Disc grinder
OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT
Weld Machine MIG/MAG
Protection Gas CO2
Solid wire AWS ER70 S6
GENERAL RECOMMENDATION:
Disassemble the components and protect the parts to allow easy access and favorable, safe work conditions for the welder.
Disconnect the battery cables if the components are installed on the machine.
Locate the welding ground cable as near as possible to the work area.
Position the parts to be reworked to allow easy and suitable welding.
WELDING PROCEDURE:
Use air arc gouging to remove the crack with the graphite electrode, forming a "J" joint. Ensure that the entire crack is removed to ensure that the crack will not return prematurely.
Clean the parts to be reworked, removing all grease, oil, paint, slag, etc.
Preheat the tower to approximately 300?C for the first pass.
Weld the root pass with the 1/8" electrode. Set the amperage between 130 Amps and 150 Amps.
Weld the filling and finishing passes with 5/32" electrodes until the weld size specified in the figures attached is reached. Set amperage from 210 Amps to 230 Amps.
Cool the C-Frame to ambient temperature and provide finishing.
