Many 1693 Engines are equipped with a Caterpillar BrakeSaver, providing safe retarding with less service brake wear.The BrakeSaver is designed to provide a means of decelerating vehicles and for controlling the forward speed of the truck while decending long grades.The BrakeSaver function is similar to a stalled fluid coupling...transforming the rolling energy of a vehicle-in-motion into HEAT which is then dissipated through the engine cooling system. OIL CIRCUIT: Through the use of an air actuated control valve which can be actuated either manually or automatically, engine oil is pumped to the BrakeSaver which is located within the engine flywheel housing. The oil is then directed against a stationary stator by means of a crankshaft driven rotor. The interaction of the rotor and stator cause the oil to be mechanically sheared and in this manner, the engine oil absorbs the retarding horsepower in the form of heat. The heated oil then flows to the engine oil cooler which transfers the heat to the engine cooling system.Completing the cycle, the oil flows from the oil cooler, through the retarder control valve and again back to the BrakeSaver. When
