Startability will be improved at temperatures below 0°C (+32°F) by the use of a GM Automatic Ether Injection System and/or use of an engine block heater, or other means to heat the crankcase oil.
This diesel engine is equipped with an electric air intake heater system to aid cold weather starting and reduce white smoke. Do not spray ether into the air intake where it may come in contact with the heater elements. Use starting fluid ONLY if the vehicle is equipped with the optional GM Automatic Ether Injection System or immediate engine damage may result. Failure to properly store starting fluid containers could result in an explosion and/or fire and possible personal injury. DO NOT STORE STARTING FLUID CONTAINERS IN THE CAB.
Start the engine using the following procedure:1. Apply the parking brake.2. Place the transmission shift lever in "N" (Neutral).3. With the clutch pedal (manual transmission) fully depressed, turn the engine control switch key to the "RUN" position. If the temperature is below 0°C (+32°F), wait until the engine "Intake Heater" light goes off before cranking the engine. The engine air intake heater system has a pre-heat function to improve cold weather starting.4. Depress accelerator fully and release.5. Depress accelerator approximately 1/3 of travel before cranking and hold during engine cranking.6. If the engine does not start after 30 seconds of cranking, release the engine control switch key and wait two minutes. Repeat steps 4 and 5.
Do not keep the starter engaged for more than 30 seconds at a time. Wait two minutes to allow the starter motor to cool before trying again. If the engine does not start after 3 attempts, determine the cause of malfunction. Pumping the accelerator will in no way assist in starting the engine.
7. Release the key the instant the engine starts.8. After the engine starts, check to make sure the transmission is still in "N" (Neutral) and release the clutch pedal (manual transmission). The vehicle may be operated at light or moderate load and speed as soon as engine oil pressure and air pressure (if equipped) have reached normal levels. Applying some load will help the engine reach normal operating temperature sooner. Do not race the engine to speed warm-up. If idling with no load, do not exceed 1350 rpm.Air Inlet Heater
To aid cold weather starting and reduce white smoke at start-up, the Caterpillar 3116 diesel engine is equipped with an electric air heater grid located at the air inlet elbow. The heater control module senses engine oil pressure, engine coolant temperature, and time. Under the proper conditions, the control module activates a switch, which turns the heater on and off. The air inlet heater system is designed to provide heat prior to start-up, during cranking, and after the engine has started. If the coolant temperature is below the preset limit, the control module allows the heater to stay on for pre-heating when the ignition is turned to the "run" position.
