Remember that a problem is not necessarily caused by one component, but by the relation of one component with other components. The list of procedures for troubleshooting can not provide all possible problems and corrections. Service personnel must find the problem and the source of the problem. Then, complete the necessary repairs.General Procedure
Know the Machine.Understand the operation of the machine. Know if the symptom is a characteristic of normal operation or if the symptom is a failure.Read the systems operation information in order to understand the systems of the machine. You must understand the interaction of the machine systems.
Prepare the machine for troubleshooting.

Identify the Symptoms.You need to speak with the operator about the symptom.
Ask about the performance of the machine prior to the failure.
Determine the time that the symptoms first occurred.
Determine the operating conditions at the time of the failure.
Ask the operator about the sequence of events prior to the failure. Determine the order of the occurrences.
Ask the operator about the steps that have been taken to troubleshoot the machine.
Check the history of repairs of the machine.
Ask about the preventive maintenance of the machine.Inspect the machine. Look for problems. Notice any unusual odors in the air. Listen for unusual noises.
Check the component data display mode.The component data display mode will show the values of the data that are received by the ECM or the values that are sent by the ECM. The components include sensors, switches, etc. Each of the components is referenced by a unique CID (component identifier).The information in the following reference provides the required tools, procedures, and CID descriptions.Reference: Refer to "Accessing Calibration And Display Modes of The Monitoring System" under "System Calibrations (D5M, D6M, D6R, D7R)" in Service Manual, SENR8367, "Power Train Electronic Control System".
