See the Reference Article. This breather group could allow more oil in the fumes that exited the breather. The 7W5040 Air Filter Element (foam type) may not filter out all the oil particles from the breather fumes. This can result in oil and combustion products collecting in the compressor side of the turbocharger and in the aftercooler core. These engines should have the compressor side of the turbocharger (compressor wheel and housing) and the aftercooler core cleaned every 500 hours of operation or when needed. If applicable, make note of this information in the Reference.
The larger 4P9440 Breather Group (see the Reference Article) is effective with 3116 Marine Engines 4KG1168 and 1SK110. If these engines are equipped with the 7W5040 Air filter Element (foam type), the compressor side of the turbocharger and the aftercooler core should be cleaned every 2000 hours of operation or when needed. If applicable, make note of this information in the Reference.
If the engine is equipped with 8N5006 Air Filter Element (paper type), regardless of the breather group, the compressor side of the turbocharger and the aftercooler does not require regular cleaning. The paper type filter will remove all the oil from the engine intake air. However the paper type filter will tend to plug more quickly than the foam type filter. The use of the larger breather group (see the Reference Article) will also result in longer filter life for the paper type filter.
