SAFETY - PRODUCT IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM FOR INSPECTING AND REWELDING A ROPS WELD
MODELS INVOLVED - On Certain 416E, 420E, And 430E
Dear Caterpillar Product Owner:
A weld may be missing on the ROPS structure of the cab and needs to be inspected and rewelded if necessary on the products listed below. The missing weld could compromise the ROPS structure which may result in personal injury or death. You will not be charged for the service performed.
Contact your local Caterpillar dealer immediately to schedule this service. The dealer will advise you of the time required to complete this service.
Please refer the dealer to their Service Letter dated 22May2006 when scheduling this service.
We regret the inconvenience this may cause you, but urge you to have this service performed for your added safety and satisfaction.

Rework Procedure
1) Remove tire and fender plate. (Note the cab does not need to be removed for this repair.) On machine left hand side, drain fuel tank before repairing. On machine right hand side remove batteries before repairing.

2) Disconnect battery (if batteries are not removed) and disconnect cab ground strap.

3) Inspect for the gap between plate D and plate E between A and C. If the gap is greater than 3.0mm, the ROPS must be replaced. If the gap is greater than 3.0mm please contact Backhoe Loader Product Support at the numbers above.

4) Remove existing weld.
5) Reweld two plates per specification shown in the illustration below from A -to- C. Note: Refer to SEHS6929 for proper ROPS welding procedures.
