(4) Valve spool for outlet relief valveTorque converter outlet relief valve (1) controls the minimum pressure of the oil inside the torque converter. Oil enters the torque converter outlet relief valve through passage (2) from the torque converter. The oil flows past spool (4) and out passage (3) to the transmission oil cooler. From the oil cooler, the oil flows through the transmission lube system to the sump.Modulating Valve (Torque Converter Lockup Clutch)

(9) DrainThe modulating valve for the torque converter lockup clutch is an output of the power train electronic control module (ECM). The ECM will analyze the proper control input. When the ECM determines that the conditions are correct, the ECM will energize the valve. Oil enters the valve through supply port (7) from the power train oil filter. The valve will then fill the lockup clutch. The valve then modulates the pressure in the lockup clutch. The valve maintains a pressure which is determined by the amount of current in the solenoid. The transmission electronic control module (ECM) determines the amount of current to supply to the lockup clutch valve. Once the modulating valve has been energized, the lockup clutch is engaged. This allows the output shaft of the torque converter to turn at a speed that is consistent with the engine output. The engagement of the torque converter lockup clutch basically provides a direct transfer of power from the engine output to the torque converter output.
