Paint Repair Procedure
ISSUE:
There are field failures of paint peeling from primer due to outdoor UV exposure for extended periods prior to black topcoat paint application. The cabs exhibiting adhesion loss of the black topcoat from the primer did not have proper cleaning or prep, including scuff sanding of the primer prior to black topcoat application. The cleaning and prep would have removed the chalking of the primer caused by the extended UV from outdoor exposure resulting in robust adhesion of the topcoat.
PROCEDURE:
Step 1- Pressure wash cab at close range of less than 12 inches to remove all loose black topcoat. Be sure to go over the surface multiple times to ensure all loose paint is removed.
Step 2- Thoroughly rinse and dry the cab.
Step 3- Test for adhesion adjacent to areas of paint loss using duct tape to ensure all loose paint is removed. Go to Step 5 if less than 1mm of black paint removal is noted with the duct tape.
Step 4- Repeat Steps 1-3 until step 3 results are successful.
Step 5- Identify the areas requiring repaint and mask off the good portion of the cab using 3M masking tape and paper or plastic film. It is important to mask to a natural break such as an edge or weld to produce cosmetically acceptable results.
Step 6- Scuff sand the exposed primer thoroughly using a dual-action sander, feathering the edge of the black topcoat to primer transition, being careful to minimize sand-through to bare metal.
Note: For scuff sanding, use 3M 400 grit sandpaper or equivalent, following the manufacturer's instructions.
Step7- Using 3M 7448 gray pads scuff sand the remaining area of black topcoat that is unmasked that will be overpainted with repair paint.
Step 8- Clean and prep the repair area using PPG DX330, DX320 or similar cleaning solvent blend.
The cab is now ready and clean for paint and must be final prep and painted within an hour.
Step 9- Final prep the cab by tacking-off the repair area to remove any lingering dust or lint prior to painting using 3M or equivalent tack cloth intended for use prior to priming and painting.
* Steps 10 and 11 to be performed by an experienced painter or trained paint technician using a pressure pot or cup gun to achieve acceptable results.
Step 10- Following the Tech Data Sheet, Mix the primer DP90LF:DP401LF,in a 2:1 ratio, with GXH1080 hardener and spot prime any areas that were sanded through to expose bare metal. Use up to 1 part acetone when mixing the primers if needed to
