The following procedure controls bearing preload. The procedure provides the same results for new bearings and for used bearings. 1. Install bearing cone (2) and bearing cone (22) onto the differential group. Make sure that the bearing cone is fully seated. Lubricate the bearing cone with clean differential oil. 2. Press bearing cup (8) and bearing cup (10) in pinion housing (27). Make sure that the bearing cups are fully seated.3. Press bearing cone (9) on pinion (26). Make sure that the bearing cone is fully seated. Lubricate the bearing cone with clean differential oil. 4. Install pinion (26) in housing (27). Press bearing cone (11) onto the pinion shaft. Allow a small amount of end play to remain. Lubricate the bearing cone with clean differential oil. If you freeze the bearing cups, allow the parts to reach a uniform temperature. Then use a driver or a press to reset the bearing cups. The limit for freezing the bearing cups is ... -29°C (-20°F) . Remove any frost and wipe the bearing cups dry. Lubricate the bearing cups with clean differential oil in order to prevent rust on the baring cups. If you heat the bearing cones, allow the parts to reach a uniform temperature. Then use a driver or a press to reset the bearing cones. The limit for heating the bearing cones is ... 135°C (275°F)for a maximum of four hours. Lubricate the bearing cones with clean differential oil after the bearing cones have cooled in order to prevent rust on the bearing cones. 5. Secure the assembled pinion housing (27) in a holding fixture. Install washer (12) and nut (13).6. While you rotate pinion shaft (26), tighten nut (13) in order to achieve a preload rolling torque of ... 1.0 to 1.7 N m (9 to 15 lb inch). This is the torque that is needed in order to rotate pinion (26). Use a 125-5723Socket Wrench Assembly to tighten nut (13). Make sure that there is zero end play of pinion shaft (26). Reduce the preload rolling torque to ... 0.5 to 0.85 N m (4.5 to 7.5 lb inch)for used roller bearings with more than 100 hours of operation.7. If the preload rolling torque for the pinion exceeds the specifications, back off nut (13) by 1/8turn and reseat bearing cone (11) and washer (12) against nut (13). Perform Step 6 again.
